BioAlabama Elects 2015-2016 Officers and Hosts BioMixer

HUNTSVILLE, AL – BioAlabama, the life science advocacy organization for the state of Alabama, held its quarterly Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and elected officers for the 2015-2016 term.

BioAlabama promotes biotechnology innovation as well as the growth of emerging and existing life science companies. Additionally, BioAlabama works to increase the public’s awareness regarding the impact of the life sciences on quality of life and the state’s economy.

Carter Wells is the Vice President for Economic Development for HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville, Alabama. Mr. Wells leads the economic development team and is responsible for building the institute’s life sciences entrepreneurial environment as well as recruiting industry to HudsonAlpha’s biotech campus. Additionally, Mr. Wells serves as CEO of the molecular diagnostic company, iCubate®.

Dr. Kathy Nugent serves as Managing Director for the UAB Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Nugent is a senior biotechnology executive with over 20 years of healthcare industry experience. Dr. Nugent currently serves as the director and assistant professor of the Masters of Biotechnology program at UAB, specializing in providing senior counsel to companies focused on pharmaceutical discovery and development.

Cecil Bostany is a Member in the Tax Division of Warren Averett in Birmingham, Alabama and has over 32 years of experience working with privately-owned, venture-backed and publicly-held companies. He has extensive experience in mergers & acquisitions, due-diligence, transaction structuring and financing and is a taxation planning specialist.

Dr. Michael Chambers is an experienced businessman, entrepreneur and attorney. He currently serves as President and CEO of Swift Biotechnology, a company he founded located in Mobile, Alabama that is developing screens and diagnostics for ovarian and endometrial cancer in collaboration with the Mitchell Cancer Institute at the University of South Alabama.



Following the board meeting, BioAlabama hosted the BioMixer reception at HudsonAlpha, sponsored by VWR International. Over 50 professionals from biotechnology and service industries throughout the state joined BioAlabama board members and Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle to network and discuss current topics and developments in Alabama’s biotech industry.




BioAlabama is a statewide organization representing Alabama’s bio related industries, research scientists, clinicians and business professionals who are working together to foster, develop and support the life sciences in Alabama.
